MOFET: excellence in math, physics and computer science

Grades 7-12

To date Hakfar Hayarok has the most advanced and best program in math, physics, chemistry and computer science.

The MOFET program is intended for 6th grade graduates who fulfill the following criteria:

Excel at study in all areas
Have excellent and commendable behaviour
Are curious and seek educational challenges
Wish to expand in the fields of exact science, physics, chemistry and computer science (software engineering)

Hakfar Hayarok provides these students, beginning in 7th grade, with very high level studies in Math, English and Physics. Beginning in 9th grade, students learn computer science, and specialize in software engineering.

All students in the program excel at study, have exemplary behaviour, and aspire to high achievement.

The study program is 6 years, so students are spared the need to transfer from junior high to high school.

Grades 7-9

During these years students study all the core subjects and expand their knowledge in Physics, Biology, and environmental sciences.

Enrichment classes are provided in two areas:

Enrichment in life sciences and environmental science
Enrichment in exact sciences and natural science

Beginning in 9th grade students learn computer science and focus on development in an internet environment, algorithm development and experience in software language.

Grades 10-12

During these years study focuses on expanding learning in preparation for Bagrut exams. Students expand their learning in the core subjects, and specialize in the following:

Math - 5 points
English - 5 points
Physics or Chemistry - 5 points
Computer science - 5 points
Final project in software engineering - 5 points

Physics study in the MOFET track at Hakfar Hayarok

Students of the MOFET track study Physics as a separate knowledge area from 7th grade until they take Bagrut exams at the level of 5 points.  The study program is based on the Ministry of Education program for Physics, with the addition of enrichment in areas of content, thinking and skills.

During their period of study students also participate in frontal teaching, execute group projects in class and in the lab and write individual research papers. Students may also participate in the MOFET national Olympiad for Physics.

Physics study in 7th-9th grades provides the basis for continued study in all technological subjects, not only physics.

Goals of the program

Familiarity with basic science, from the natural sciences
Methods of describing natural phenomena, based on physical laws
Implementation of knowledge acquired in math, in physics study
Development of students' ability to use mathematical models to understand phenomena existing in nature, and to explain them
Development of scientific thinking and research skills, both cognitive and practical

Program for 7th-8th grade

In 7th and 8th grades students acquire the skills needed for physics study. The first two years are dedicated to familiarity with physical phenomena which students encounter in their daily lives. Students learn to explain phenomena to which they are exposed based on natural laws (Newton's laws, Kinetic molecular theory, Archimedes law, law of conservation of energy) both orally and calculatively.

Beginning in 9th grade

Students prepare for Bagrut exams, developing the following skills:

Analysis of physical problem data
Adjustment of measurement units
Discovery of laws enabling problem solving
Measurement during experiments
Individual work using popular scientific texts and educational texts
Implementation of mathematical knowledge such as: change of formula subject, solution of equations, graph analysis, research of parameter correlations

Selected Subjects

Newton's laws, marking and calculation of forces, mass calculation, energy calculation, conservation of energy laws in mechanical precesses and thermal processes, electrics and magnetism, etc.

The scientists in the Physics department have developed unique educational materials for teaching the MOFET track, including support materials with detailed explanation, some visual, presentations to accompany theoretical material, workbooks including exercises at different levels of difficulty, workbook for lab experiments, enrichment books on the subjects of "hydrostatics" and "electrostatics", a collection of texts and exercises for the lower school and the upper school.
